Al Gore has suggested that concern of facing pressure from President Trump may have prompted Bill Gates to step back on his climate crisis advocacy.

Describing Trump as “the most dishonest leader the U.S. has seen”, Gore warned that the president’s support of fossil fuels and retreat from clean power is “significantly hurting” the American economic system.

Environmental Harm and Economic Impact

In an interview at the UN climate conference in Belém, Gore noted, “The president’s currently causing a lot of damage on the climate. Perhaps the biggest harm he’s doing is to the United States itself.”

He pointed out that China is now exporting eco-friendly innovations with a cumulative export value that exceeds all fossil fuel exports from the United States, a pattern that is speeding up quite dramatically.

The Philanthropist’s Surprising Reversal

The tech billionaire, formerly a leading advocate in climate action, recently suggested for pushing the climate crisis down the international agenda, to focus on global wellness.

Gore voiced bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate further surprised every climate scientist that I know and respect.”

“Yes, the president approves. That may be what the billionaire aimed at.”

Gore noted that after Trump’s re-election, Gates fired most of his climate staffers, went to the presidential residence, and lavished praise on Trump.

Fear of Reprisal

Gore suggested that Gates, like other ultra-wealthy business people, may be fearful of being bullied by Trump. “It may be that he is genuinely concerned that Trump will bully him,” Gore stated.

Trump responded to Gates’ reversal with praiseful online comments.

Gore added, “The only rave review of what he put out last week was from Donald Trump. Yeah, Trump loves it. Perhaps what he intended.”

Rejecting a False Choice

Gore stressed that framing the environmental challenge and global health crisis as opposing choices is incorrect.

“The notion that there is a binary choice between health and climate has been widely dismissed by virtually every scientist in this field,” he said.

“It’s literally insane that governments are requiring citizens to fund the destruction of part of humanity’s future.”

Gore pointed out that the Lancet released a report on the same day as Gates’ statement, detailing the enormous health consequences of inaction on climate.

A Call for Redirected Funding

Rather than diverting funds from climate action, Gore suggested that Gates should advocate for repurposing the massive sums spent on oil and gas support toward health and climate solutions.

“Speeding up progress to the climate crisis is one of the single most effective ways to improve healthcare in the world,” he declared.

Defending the UN Climate Process

Gore strongly supported the UN climate conference process, noting that they achieve significant results than they are recognized for.

“The Cop process serves as a nucleus for businesses and organizations that assemble every year,” he remarked. “Numerous groups come up with their own deals that move things forward.”

“The Cop process itself is one of the key factors that the sustainability revolution has accelerated significantly.”

He continued that industries and governments are moving forward with new technology and implementing clean power and other low-carbon initiatives.

Optimistic Trends and Shifting Attitudes

Gore highlighted what he sees as a “shift in attitudes” in the U.S., with numerous citizens embracing climate action even as the national leadership dismantles them.

He warned that Trump might face a “less obsequious” Congress following recent voting losses for Republican candidates.

“It’s entirely mistaken circulating that in some way we are losing ground.”

Gore praised the progressive politician for his successful run for NYC leadership, saying that while he disagreed with some of his proposals, his campaign abilities were impressively on display.

A Visual Warning at Cop30

At the conference, Gore showed delegates with a visual presentation of horrors linked to the climate crisis.

Standing before a large display showing images of recent disasters worsened by climate change, Gore declared, “It is literally insane that we are letting this persist.”

He spoke passionately while showing images of record drought in the Amazon, melting polar ice, and devastating weather in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, South America, the Philippines, and the United States.

“How long are we going to do nothing and keep turning the thermostat up so that these types of disasters get even worse?” he asked.

Adaptation, Mitigation, and Realism

Gore emphasized the need to prepare and prevent, but warned that if this irrational behavior continues—using the sky as an open sewer—some things will be extremely challenging to cope with.

Advancing Emissions Tracking

His main focus at the summit has been to promote the emissions mapping initiative, which tracks global warming pollutants and air pollutants causing health problems worldwide.

“There is great enthusiasm about these innovative technologies,” Gore said. “We have got the technology and the implementation strategies. Some people think we don’t have the political will, but as I like to point out, determination is a renewable resource.”
