Starting Lineups

The Merseyside club have named an experimental team, with the vast bulk of regular starters given the night off. Kerkez, seeking to improve match sharpness, is the only player to retain his starting spot after the 3-2 defeat at the Bees last weekend. Backup shot-stopper Woodman and 18-year-old Northern Ireland winger Morrison are handed first starts, while the lineup also boasts 17-year-old winger the forward and 18-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni. Nobody on their bench is over 21; Kaide Gordon is the bench player with most games with nine senior appearances on his record.

Crystal Palace on the other hand retain six players from the team sent out for the narrow loss at Mikel Arteta’s side on Sunday. Marc Guéhi, Maxence Lacroix, Muñoz, The winger, Pino and Kamada all start once more. He has five goals against Liverpool in eight appearances for Palace and Watford, while one of the players coming into the side, Eddie Nketiah, scored the winner when the teams clashed at Selhurst last month.

The Merseysiders have traditionally faced difficulties with the Eagles as difficult opponents. Not invariably – they lead the head-to-head – but when the visitors overcome the hosts, they really hit, and hit hard. Their 1990 cup meeting. The memorable comeback. The pre-season match. Last month’s fixture that precipitated this surprising slump of Liverpool’s title-winning team, the beginning of a poor run in a string of losses.

Include another few patterns into the mix. Of the last eight meetings between the clubs, The Eagles have secured three victories (we’re counting the season opener as a win), the Reds just a pair. What’s even more worrying the Merseyside club are the recent results at Liverpool’s stadium: The visitors have triumphed once and tied twice of the last three. The Londoners have a strong upper hand over the home team at the moment.

Despite this, Palace are in a dip in form of their own. They’ve lost three of their last four matches in every tournament, without a victory domestically since that previously mentioned loss-inducing visit of Liverpool to Selhurst. So here are both clubs who could do with a spark to rejuvenate their campaign. Such a scenario should give us a good possibility of some thrilling football tonight, though any long-term significance may depend on what sides the coaches decide to put out; it’s doubtful to be established starters.
