While Sunbathers Fled Danger, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, noticed pops reverberating across the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was still too bright and no one could see them,” she explains. She left her home, she witnessed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled trouble had occurred.

While standing on the avenue, talking to a duo who had hurried up the slope soaked, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and barefoot … He moved at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many acts of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and paramedics treating dozens of victims.

Community Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the community, with the beach facility next to the location of the incident serving as a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen responding bravely, including going into the water to rescue people needing help.

Following the tragedy, messages of gratitude were shared. One post conveyed appreciation for the responders who showed that “compassion will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of lifeguards published a statement, explaining they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and support. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our team,” the team stated. “Eventually, we will tell our tales in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many permanent lifeguards, said that the staff rose to the occasion from the moment the incident started right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in keeping our internationally renowned coastlines protected for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and process the atrocity of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much good we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
